Steller,s Sea eagle
Haliaeetus pelagicus
Arguably the most magnificent of all birds of prey, steller,s sea eagle regularly takes prey up to the size of geese .The Korean form of the species lacks the white on the top of the shoulder, but retains the white tail.
With broad wing spanning up to 8 feet ( over 2.4m) steller,s sea eagle is as impressive in fight as at rest , but it is more likely to be seen in the latter state as it spends relatively little time in the air. Probably this is because much of its prey is located by “ still hunting “ , requiring only a brief pursuit flight to make a capture. Tree or rocks make suitable vantage points for the purpose, but when perched, as it often is, on gravel banks in rivers or on ice floes, it probably really is resting unless spawning salmon are nearby.
